Jim Carrey in Talks for Live-Action ‘Jetsons’ Film Adaptation

Jim Carrey is reportedly negotiating to star in a live-action adaptation of the classic animated series, The Jetsons. The project, being developed by Warner Bros. Pictures, could mark a significant return for the actor to the big screen after a hiatus from major live-action roles.
According to Variety, Colin Trevorrow, known for directing Jurassic World Dominion, is expected to lead the film. Trevorrow is currently in discussions with writer Joe Epstein to craft the screenplay. At this stage, details regarding the plot and production timeline remain undisclosed.
Originally airing in 1962, The Jetsons is a family-friendly series that follows George and Jane Jetson and their children, Judy and Elroy, as they navigate life in a futuristic world. The show, which included memorable characters like the robot maid Rosie and their dog Astro, has previously been adapted into a feature film in 1990 and has seen various crossover specials over the years.
Carrey’s involvement in this project would be his first major role in several years. The 63-year-old actor last appeared as Dr. Ivo “Eggman” Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy, which spanned from 2020 to 2024. His performance earned critical acclaim for its vibrant energy and comedic timing.
While Carrey has previously hinted at stepping back from acting, stating in a March 2022 interview with Access Hollywood that he was “being fairly serious” about retirement, he clarified that he remains open to opportunities that pique his interest. He mentioned, “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink… I might continue down the road.”
In a separate conversation with Comicbook.com, Carrey elaborated on his perspective regarding retirement, referring to it more as “power-resting.” He indicated that he evaluates each project on its own merits, emphasizing the importance of the right idea and collaborative environment. “It has to be the right idea,” he said, expressing a willingness to revisit roles that have defined his career, such as Stanley Ipkiss from The Mask or the titular character in How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Carrey also noted the advancements in technology that could enhance performances, suggesting that modern motion capture techniques could streamline the process of portraying complex characters, reducing the time spent in makeup.
As negotiations progress, Carrey’s potential casting in The Jetsons could reunite him with the whimsical and energetic comedy that has characterized much of his career. Currently, Warner Bros. has not released any official comments regarding casting or production specifics.
The prospect of Carrey’s return to a beloved franchise has sparked excitement among fans and industry observers alike, marking a possible new chapter in his illustrious career.
