OpenAI has temporarily halted the ability for users to generate videos of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. using its artificial intelligence video tool, Sora. This decision comes in response to concerns raised by King’s family regarding what they described as “disrespectful depictions” of the iconic figure. The announcement was made on October 5, 2023, via a statement shared on social media platform X.

In its statement, OpenAI emphasized the importance of free speech in representing historical figures, but also acknowledged that public figures and their families should have control over how their likeness is utilized. “Authorized representatives or estate owners can request that their likeness not be used in Sora cameos,” the company asserted. This policy aims to respect the wishes of families like that of Dr. King.

Collaboration with the King Family

The Estate of Martin Luther King Jr., Inc. (King, Inc.) has been actively involved in discussions with OpenAI regarding the representation of Dr. King in Sora-generated content. Following recent instances where users created inappropriate videos featuring King, OpenAI recognized the need for clearer guidelines. The change to Sora follows the launch of Sora 2, which allows users to create hyper-realistic AI-generated videos of both real and historical figures.

Critics have expressed concern that such technology contributes to a growing landscape of misinformation and “AI slop,” thereby obscuring the line between reality and fabrication. This sentiment has been echoed by the daughter of late actor Robin Williams, Zelda Williams, who recently criticized the use of her father’s likeness in AI videos, describing them as “disturbing.”

Ethical Conversations on AI Usage

OpenAI acknowledged the input from Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., as well as John Hope Bryant and the AI Ethics Council, stating, “We thank Dr. Bernice A. King for reaching out on behalf of King, Inc., and John Hope Bryant for creating space for conversations like this.” The dialogue surrounding the ethical implications of AI technology continues to evolve, with stakeholders advocating for responsible usage.

While the King Center has not yet commented on the recent developments, the decision to ban videos of King marks a significant step in addressing the concerns raised by his estate. As artificial intelligence technologies advance, the need for a framework that respects individuals’ rights and preserves historical integrity becomes increasingly crucial.

OpenAI’s actions reflect a growing awareness of the responsibilities that come with developing AI tools capable of generating deeply personal and culturally significant content.
