WWII-Era Bomb Rendered Safe After Discovery in Oshawa Path

URGENT UPDATE: A Second World War-era explosive device discovered on a walking path in Oshawa, Ontario, has been rendered safe, according to Durham Regional Police. The alarming find occurred earlier this week near Gibb and Centre streets when a suspicious package, resembling military ordnance, was reported.
Authorities confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that the package appeared to have “wiring and warning labels.” Police quickly set up a perimeter, evacuating all pedestrians from the area to ensure public safety. The situation escalated as the police’s tactical support and explosive disposal unit were deployed to handle the potential threat.
A specialist from the Department of National Defence arrived on the scene, confirming that the device was indeed a WWII-era bomblet. In a coordinated effort, police and DND safely removed the wartime bomb. It has since been transported to a Canadian Forces military base, where it has been rendered safe and is no longer capable of detonation.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and local authorities are now investigating the origins of this unexpected find. Investigators are urging anyone with information or relevant footage from cellphone, dashcam, or surveillance cameras in the area to come forward. Tipsters could be eligible for a $2,000 reward for valuable information.
This incident highlights the importance of vigilance in public spaces and the potential dangers posed by unexploded ordnance. Authorities are committed to ensuring the safety of residents and are taking all necessary precautions to prevent similar occurrences in the future. As investigations continue, the community remains on alert, emphasizing the need for public cooperation.
