Fraser Health Warns Public About Illegal Food Service Operations

Fraser Health has issued a public warning regarding the risks associated with purchasing food from unauthorized providers. The health authority’s advisory, released on March 10, 2024, follows numerous complaints about “illegal food service operations” in the region.
In its announcement, Fraser Health emphasized the importance of buying food exclusively from approved establishments. The warning was disseminated in English and six other languages to reach a broader audience. Complaints have highlighted operations taking place in unapproved commercial kitchens and private residences, including single-family homes, garages, townhomes, and apartments.
According to the health authority, these illegal operations may offer various services, such as catering, tiffin services, and takeout or delivery of ready-to-eat foods and baked goods. As these businesses lack valid operating permits, they pose significant food safety risks. Fraser Health noted that permits are only granted after a thorough application review and on-site inspection.
The advisory cautioned that consuming food from unlicensed sources increases the risk of foodborne illnesses, including E. coli and hepatitis. These illnesses can particularly affect vulnerable populations, such as children, the elderly, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems.
Fraser Health has made it clear that inspection reports for all licensed food service establishments are available online, along with information on closure and correction orders. Members of the public are encouraged to report any complaints, concerns, or questions regarding food premises through the Fraser Health website.
This warning serves as a vital reminder for consumers to remain vigilant about the sources of their food, ensuring that they prioritize safety by choosing only recognized and inspected food service providers.
