Located at 184 1/2 Portage Avenue in St. James, Ryan Taylor transformed his lifelong passion for collecting into a full-time business, known as “Winnipeg’s favourite collectable store.” Taylor’s journey began as a child collecting toys, comics, and other memorabilia. In September 2024, he opened his storefront, showcasing a diverse range of nostalgic items.

“My store is where the hunt ends and the collecting begins,” Taylor remarked. His shop features everything from pro wrestling and Star Wars merchandise to vintage board games.

Despite his success, Taylor faces obstacles like shipping delays and tariffs, which complicate his efforts to keep prices affordable. “Many items are one-offs — once they’re gone, they’re gone,” he noted. With the support of his family, he remains committed to adapting and learning in order to keep his business operational five days a week.

Little Bones Wings: Navigating the Hospitality Challenges

At 123 Regent Avenue West in Transcona, Dave McKay, Managing Partner of Little Bones Wings, highlights the difficulties his restaurant faces in the hospitality sector. The pandemic has compounded issues such as inflation, supply chain chaos, and rising crime rates.

“Maintaining a consistent supply of quality domestic poultry has been a constant battle,” McKay explained. Many suppliers in Manitoba have struggled to meet demand, leading McKay to refuse frozen wings and instead focus on fresh products. This commitment to quality has paid off, with sales increasing by 20% since 2023.

To adapt to the changing market, Little Bones Wings has also changed its menu to eliminate U.S. products, thereby “Canadianizing” its offerings. The restaurant now boasts 82 flavours and a growing customer base, thanks in part to a strong, dedicated team.

Kids Etc Youth Movement Company: A Commitment to Inclusivity

Founded in 1978, Rheesa Schachter established the Kids Etc Youth Movement Company (KEYMC) to provide an inclusive dance program that fosters fun and community spirit. Located at 505 Fort Whyte Way since 2017, KEYMC has expanded to 11,000 square feet, featuring four modern studios equipped with sprung floors and mirrors.

The pandemic forced the company to pivot to virtual classes, presenting significant challenges to the arts sector. “Our faculty used that time to learn new skills,” Schachter said, highlighting their commitment to evolving teaching techniques.

As inflation continues to impact operational costs, KEYMC focuses on sourcing costumes domestically to mitigate tariffs. Schachter remains steadfast in keeping dance accessible, ensuring fees have not increased with inflation. The studio offers a range of classes from Jazz to Hip Hop, attracting students aged 2 to 72, and consistently earns accolades at local and national competitions.
