Science Centre Hosts Two Weekends of SLIMELab Fun

The Prince Albert Science Centre launched its first-ever SLIMELab this past weekend, inviting visitors to explore the fascinating world of slime making. Held on October 21 and 22, 2023, this event marked the beginning of two weekends dedicated to the popular activity, expanding on a previously successful integration of slime making into other events.

According to Sandra Williams, Chair of the Prince Albert Science Centre, slime making was a hit during the centre’s Santa Lab in December 2024, prompting the decision to dedicate an entire weekend to the process. “SLIMELab is totally based on science and chemistry,” Williams explained. “We decided to have two slimy weekends in October to celebrate this engaging activity.”

Attendees had the opportunity to create their own slime by mixing common household ingredients. Williams detailed the scientific principles behind slime creation, noting, “Slime is a polymer, so you’re mixing white glue or clear glue with contact solution and baking powder. Those three items, when put together, will activate to make a polymer.” This hands-on experience not only entertained but also educated participants about the chemistry involved.

The cost for participants was $10 per container, allowing them to make two batches of slime. Admission to the Science Centre was free with the purchase of a container, and adult supervision was required for all children participating. The SLIMELab event will continue on the weekends of October 25 and 26, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. each day.

Attendance on the opening weekend was strong, according to Williams, who expressed optimism about future turnout. “We’ve had a great crowd so far, and I would suspect more people will come out,” she said, highlighting the community’s growing interest in such interactive events. The Science Centre takes a break during the summer months to host science camps, but the return of events like SLIMELab is welcomed by both staff and visitors.

In addition to SLIMELab, the Prince Albert Science Centre will also host the return of Brick Lab on November 22-23 and November 29-30, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. each day.
