Social Media’s Double-Edged Sword: Navigating Benefits and Risks

In March 2024, Janine LeGal, a freelance writer based in Winnipeg, experienced a severe bout of influenza that sidelined her for several weeks. During her recovery, she made the decision to limit her time on social media, an action that prompted her to reflect on the complex role these platforms play in modern life.
The Disconnection from Digital Life
Initially, LeGal’s choice to step back was driven by her need for rest. As her health improved, she began to re-engage with social media but quickly found herself overwhelmed by the negativity prevalent in many posts. Reports of wars, political strife, and misinformation contributed to a sense of unease. She noted a disturbing trend in which users publicly declared, “If you support this, unfriend me,” which led her to express her dismay in her own post, resulting in a noticeable decrease in her online connections.
During a recent visit to a service provider, she was surprised when a young staff member suggested that society was better off before the advent of social media. “People had time for their neighbours,” he said, highlighting a longing for the personal interactions that have diminished in the digital age. This sentiment resonated with LeGal, prompting her to consider the amount of time spent online versus the value of face-to-face relationships.
The Balancing Act of Social Media
LeGal acknowledged the myriad benefits social media offers. From raising awareness for important causes to reconnecting with old friends, these platforms can lead to significant positive outcomes. Campaigns that support communities and the dissemination of knowledge are just a few examples of how social media can drive social change.
Yet, she also recognized the darker side of this digital landscape. The addictive nature of social media, coupled with its potential to impact mental health negatively, cannot be overlooked. It serves as both an escape and a source of stress, often replacing genuine human interaction with superficial connections.
LeGal’s experiences with social media mirror the struggles many face today. The ease of sharing opinions with a broad audience brings its own set of challenges. A momentary lapse in judgment can lead to serious consequences, including job loss and damaged relationships. She reflected on her volunteer work with Amnesty International, which has taught her the importance of free speech, while also reminding her of its limitations.
The rise of questionable content, such as hate speech and misinformation, raises critical questions about the responsibility of users and the platforms themselves. Despite the vast array of information accessible online, the challenge lies in discerning credible sources from falsehoods, making social media both a powerful tool and a potential pitfall.
Ultimately, LeGal concluded that her time away from screens provided an opportunity for introspection. It urged her to evaluate how much of her life she was willing to dedicate to social media, as opposed to investing in real-world connections and issues. In a world dominated by digital interactions, her experience serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of finding balance in an increasingly complex environment.
