Waterloo Region School Board Seeks Community Input on Education

The Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) has initiated a public consultation process aimed at enhancing educational services in the region. Announced earlier this month, the board seeks to update its multi-year strategic plan through a series of surveys, focus groups, and town hall meetings. This initiative aims to engage a broad spectrum of the school community, including students, staff, parents, families, caregivers, and local residents.
Estefania Brandenstein, a spokesperson for the WRDSB, stated, “The WRDSB wants to hear from students, staff, parents, families, caregivers and community as your feedback will support the WRDSB in determining how we can continue to improve our efforts to support the educational needs of students in the WRDSB.” The board encourages input from all community members to gather diverse perspectives that will inform future educational strategies.
Expanding Community Engagement
The previous strategic plan, developed in 2022 under former director jeewan chanicka, established a vision and six strategic directions to guide decision-making, with a focus on student success. This plan incorporated insights from approximately 5,000 students and an equal number of staff and community members. Despite this extensive engagement, the board aims to broaden its outreach for the current update.
Brandenstein emphasized that the consultation process is designed to capture a wide array of perspectives. “This process is focused on hearing from a wide range of perspectives related to the strategic plan that was developed in 2022,” she noted. The board plans to offer multiple avenues for participation, facilitating both in-person and virtual attendance at town hall sessions.
While the initial strategic plan served as a guideline, it faced criticism from some trustees and parents, who expressed concerns regarding its emphasis on academic achievement and the clarity of its success metrics. The plan mandates an annual report card to be issued to the public, yet the reports for 2023 and 2024 diverged from traditional formats. Rather than providing grades or identifying areas requiring improvement, they presented a general summary of achievements from the previous school year.
Timeline and Next Steps
The board is currently finalizing the survey and anticipates launching community consultations within the coming weeks. Regular updates will be made available on the WRDSB’s website and social media platforms, in addition to being shared during public board meetings.
In March, the board approved a motion to commence the strategic plan update. With planning starting in May and continuing through the summer, the board is now transitioning into the implementation phase, expected to last until the end of December. Following this phase, staff will compile the feedback and present a final report in the spring of 2026.
The WRDSB’s proactive approach to community consultation reflects a commitment to adapting its educational strategies based on the needs and insights of its community members. Through this engagement process, the board aims to strengthen its efforts to support the achievement and well-being of all students in the region.
