Abbotsford Names John LeBlanc and Harry Schmidt Community Champions

UPDATE: The City of Abbotsford has just announced the recipients of the prestigious Community Champion Achievement Award. John LeBlanc and the late Harry Schmidt have been recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community, underscoring the profound impact of dedicated individuals.
On October 21, 2024, during a ceremony led by Mayor Ross Siemens, it was revealed that LeBlanc and Schmidt’s efforts exemplify what it truly means to be community champions. “Their selflessness, leadership, and humanity remind us of the profound impact one person can have on the world around them,” Siemens stated.
LeBlanc, known for his adventurous spirit, is being honored for his courageous role in the nine-month search for lost hiker Jordan Naterer in Manning Park in 2021. His relentless determination culminated in the discovery of Naterer in a challenging drainage basin, showcasing bravery and compassion during a critical time. “His actions exemplify the highest ideals of community service: courage in the face of danger and unwavering dedication to others,” Siemens emphasized.
Harry Schmidt, a respected builder and developer who passed away in September 2024, is celebrated for his lifetime of service and philanthropy. His legacy includes constructing affordable housing for seniors and supporting orphanages and medical facilities in developing nations. Schmidt was also integral to the Kiwanis Club of Clearbrook and served as a councillor and deputy mayor for the District of Matsqui from 1983 to 1990.
“Through his decades of community involvement, Harry exemplified the very spirit of community service,” Siemens remarked. “His impact endures through the countless lives touched by his generosity.”
As part of this honor, both LeBlanc and Schmidt will have their names engraved on paving stones along the city-wide Discovery Trail, located within Abbotsford’s Community Champions pavilion. This initiative not only commemorates their achievements but also inspires future generations to engage in community service.
This announcement resonates deeply within the Abbotsford community, as it highlights the importance of compassion and dedication in transforming lives. The stories of LeBlanc and Schmidt serve as a powerful reminder of the positive change one person can create.
Residents and local leaders are urged to reflect on the legacies of these champions and consider how they can contribute to their own communities. The recognition of LeBlanc and Schmidt is not just an award; it is a call to action for all to embody the spirit of service and community involvement.
Stay tuned for further updates on community initiatives and how you can get involved in making a difference in Abbotsford.
