The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has announced a significant change to its admissions process for specialized programs, moving from a lottery system to a merit-based approach. This shift was confirmed in a statement posted on the TDSB website on Tuesday, following directives from the Supervisor appointed by the Minister of Education.

In a letter addressed to parents, the TDSB outlined the new admissions process, stating that applications for specialized programs will open during the week of November 10, 2025, and remain open for three weeks. These specialized programs, which include areas such as arts, mathematics, science and technology, and leadership, are available at both elementary and secondary levels across various TDSB schools.

For elementary students, admissions will be determined by an evaluated portfolio or audition video submitted alongside their application. Secondary students will be required to meet specific academic criteria, with their report card marks being a critical factor in the selection process. “Applicants will be seated based on their overall applicant score; a combination of select report card marks connected to their program of choice and an evaluated demonstration of knowledge and skills,” the letter explained.

The decision to implement a merit-based system aims to enhance the fairness and transparency of the admissions process. The TDSB plans to hold open houses at schools offering specialized programs throughout November, allowing prospective students and their families to gain insights into the programs available.

This move marks a pivotal change for the TDSB, Canada’s largest school board, impacting how students apply for and gain entry into programs designed to nurture their talents and interests. As educational landscapes evolve, the adoption of a merit-based system reflects a broader trend towards recognizing and rewarding student achievement and potential.
