British Columbia Urges Flu, COVID-19 Shots Amid Vaccine Misinformation

UPDATE: British Columbia health officials are urgently urging residents to get their flu and COVID-19 vaccinations as misinformation about vaccines continues to spread. With the 2025-2026 fall vaccination campaign underway, health leaders emphasize the rising number of residents getting vaccinated compared to last year.

As of October 19, 2025, nearly 275,000 people in B.C. have received their flu vaccines, an increase from approximately 254,000 at the same time last year. For COVID-19, 215,000 individuals have been vaccinated, up from almost 158,000 during the first week of the 2024 campaign.

B.C. Health Minister Josie Osborne addressed the increasing trend on Wednesday, highlighting the troubling impact of growing vaccine misinformation, particularly from sources outside Canada. “These false claims can undermine confidence in proven public health measures,” she stated, urging residents to rely on scientific evidence and expert medical advice.

Deputy Provincial Health Officer Martin Lavoie warned of circulating viruses that could lead to serious health complications, stating, “We’re all potentially susceptible.” He emphasized the importance of vaccinations for those most at risk, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic medical conditions.

Everyone in B.C. aged six months and older is encouraged to get immunized with the updated vaccines. Health officials recommend that essential community and health-care workers, along with those at highest risk for severe illness, prioritize their vaccinations.

Notifications for booking vaccinations are being sent out via the Get Vaccinated system. Residents not yet registered can do so online or by calling 1 833 838-2323. Vaccines are available through various health authority clinics, over 1,200 participating pharmacies, and select primary-care providers.
