Prepare a Spooktacular Halloween with Transylvanian Ghoulash

Halloween falls on October 31, 2023, this year, providing families with an opportunity to celebrate the spooky season. As children eagerly anticipate trick-or-treating, parents must also consider meal preparations that fit the festive theme. One enjoyable option is the slow cooker recipe for Transylvanian Ghoulash, a dish designed to satisfy and energize the entire family before heading out for Halloween festivities.
Halloween Inspiration from Transylvania
Transylvanian Ghoulash combines elements of a traditional Hungarian dish with a Halloween twist, making it perfect for the occasion. While one might typically associate goulash with Hungary, the connection to Transylvania is historically relevant. This region was part of Hungary for several centuries, and it serves as the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler, the historical figure who inspired Bram Stoker’s iconic character, Count Dracula. Although Vlad would likely not have claimed this dish as his own, it is amusing to think he might have enjoyed it after a long day.
The dish is a hearty meal, ideal for serving a crowd of “Boils and Ghouls.” It is easy for parents to prepare ahead of time, allowing them to spend more time with their children on Halloween night.
Recipe for Transylvanian Ghoulash
This recipe is designed for a large slow cooker, accommodating 6 to 8 servings. It requires minimal active cooking time, with preparation taking about 15 to 25 minutes and cooking time ranging from 4 hours on high to 6 to 8 hours on low.
Ingredients:
– 5 or 6 carrots, peeled and cut into sticks
– 5 or 6 sticks of celery, washed and cut into sticks
– 500 ml (2 cups) of shredded cheddar cheese (aged cheddar recommended)
– 410 g (4 cups) of uncooked elbow macaroni
– 15 ml (1 tablespoon) of olive oil
– 454 g (1 lb) of ground beef
– 2 cloves of garlic, minced
– 1 yellow onion, diced
– 1 green bell pepper, diced
– 1 (796 ml) can of crushed tomatoes
– 1 (796 ml) can of diced tomatoes with liquid
– 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of Worcestershire sauce
– 10 ml (2 teaspoons) of sweet paprika
– 3 ml (1/2 teaspoon) of salt
– 3 ml (1/2 teaspoon) of ground black pepper
Preparation Steps:
1. The day before Halloween, prepare the carrots and celery, refrigerating them in a container. Shred the cheese and store it in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
2. Cook the elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain, rinse with cold water, and toss with olive oil to prevent sticking. Store in a covered container in the refrigerator.
3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef, removing excess fat. Add the garlic, green pepper, and onion, cooking until the onion becomes transparent, approximately 5-7 minutes. Transfer the mixture to a container, let it cool, cover, and refrigerate.
On Halloween morning, transfer the beef and vegetable mixture to the slow cooker. Add the crushed and diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well and cover. Cook on high for 3-4 hours or on low for 6-8 hours.
When ready to serve, reheat the refrigerated macaroni by pouring boiling water over it in a large bowl. Let it sit for 2 minutes, drain, and serve the ghoulash over the pasta. Top with shredded cheese and enjoy with celery and carrot sticks on the side.
This festive dish combines the spirit of Halloween with a comforting meal that will keep the energy up for all the evening’s activities. Enjoying Transylvanian Ghoulash not only nourishes the family but also adds a thematic touch to the Halloween celebrations.
