Microsoft Unveils Mico: A New AI Assistant for Copilot
Microsoft has introduced a new AI assistant named Mico, designed to enhance its Copilot product. Mico, which derives its name from both Microsoft and Copilot, is characterized as an amorphous blob that adapts its shape and color in response to user interactions. The company aims to create a virtual companion that feels “expressive, customizable, and warm,” reminiscent of the popular Office Assistant, Clippy.
Jacob Andreou, Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President of Product and Growth of AI, highlighted the connection to Clippy during a conversation with The Verge. He noted, “Clippy walked so Mico could run,” emphasizing the evolution from the nostalgic assistant to a more sophisticated AI helper. Early testers of Mico have discovered an interesting feature: with repeated clicks, the assistant can temporarily transform into Clippy, offering a playful nod to Microsoft’s past.
As part of its capabilities, Mico is expected to include a “Learn Live” mode, which will convert the assistant into a voice-enabled Socratic tutor. This mode aims to guide users through concepts rather than simply providing direct answers, promoting a more interactive learning experience. Microsoft envisions Mico as a tool that exemplifies how AI can be “helpful, supportive, and deeply personal,” enhancing user engagement.
Mico is set to launch in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The assistant will be enabled by default in Copilot, although users will have the option to disable it if they prefer. This development is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to integrate AI into its products, even as the company continues to navigate significant changes within its business landscape, including transformations affecting its Xbox division.
Microsoft’s push towards AI reflects a growing trend within the tech industry, where companies are increasingly seeking to leverage artificial intelligence to improve user experience and engagement. As Mico prepares for its rollout, it will be interesting to see how users respond to this new virtual assistant and the innovative features it offers.
