Edmonton Oilers Surge to Best Start in Three Years with Thrilling Win
UPDATE: The Edmonton Oilers have just secured a thrilling 6-5 victory over the Montreal Canadiens, marking their best start to an NHL season in three years. This nail-biting win, achieved on October 23, 2025, highlights the team’s determination as they strive for success early in the season.
The Oilers, now boasting a record of 4-3-1, showcased resilience as they mounted a dramatic comeback in the third period. Vasily Podkolzin scored the game-winning goal with just over a minute remaining, solidifying the Oilers’ second consecutive win.
Despite a rocky performance, including a moment where they trailed 5-3 in the third period, the Oilers displayed their fighting spirit. Darnell Nurse, who contributed two assists, emphasized the importance of a strong start this season, stating, “We’re sitting here at 4-3-1… our group knows we have to be a lot better.”
The match saw Edmonton initially take a surprising 3-1 lead before a flurry of goals from Montreal tied the game. However, the Oilers responded with two power-play goals in less than a minute, showcasing their offensive power. Podkolzin’s backhanded shot, which he executed while falling to his knees, brought the crowd to its feet and sealed the game.
“Down by two for the Oilers is nothing, I guess. Finding a way to get two points was good,” said Podkolzin, reflecting on the team’s tenacity.
Despite the win, the Oilers acknowledged areas needing improvement. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins remarked, “It just wasn’t good enough… for most of the game it was not our standard.” Coach Kris Knoblauch echoed this sentiment, noting that while the last minutes showed promise, the first part of the game was disorganized.
Oilers captain Connor McDavid was instrumental in the victory, contributing three assists. Additionally, David Tomasek celebrated his first career NHL goal during the game, marking a milestone in his new journey with the Oilers.
This latest performance positions the Oilers as a team to watch this season, especially as they work to build on their early success. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how they will continue to evolve as the season progresses.
As the Oilers gear up for their next challenge, all eyes will be on their ability to maintain momentum and elevate their game further. The urgency for improvement is clear, and the excitement surrounding their performance is palpable.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Edmonton Oilers strive to solidify their place as a top contender this NHL season.
