The Saskatchewan Teacher’s Federation (STF) expressed satisfaction with the provincial government’s commitment to public education as outlined in the Throne Speech delivered on Wednesday, March 15, 2024. The STF noted the government’s recognition of the significance of public education and emphasized the importance of investing in students following years of budget constraints.

In a press release, STF President Samantha Becotte highlighted the positive shift in the government’s approach. “Education works and investing in public education is an investment in our province’s future,” Becotte stated. She mentioned that discussions with Education Minister Everett Hindley have focused on collaboration to tackle the challenges faced by students and educators.

The recent bargaining round concluded with an arbitrated decision that allocated an additional $20 million per year to public education and led to the hiring of approximately 500 new teachers. This funding aims to address the complexity of classrooms and improve learning conditions for students.

While the STF welcomes these developments, Becotte emphasized that more work is necessary. “While this is a positive step forward, our work is not done,” she said. The federation is advocating for further funding and cooperative efforts to resolve ongoing challenges in schools and to meet diverse student needs.

Becotte reaffirmed the commitment of teachers to collaborate with the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to shape a better future for Saskatchewan’s education system. The STF remains optimistic about the government’s priorities and hopes that the commitment to public education will lead to tangible improvements in schools across the province.

This renewed focus on education could mark a turning point for Saskatchewan, where educators and students have faced significant challenges in recent years. As the government continues to outline its educational strategies, the STF will closely monitor progress and engage in ongoing dialogue to ensure that the needs of students and teachers are met.
