Princeton Tigers Dominate Erie-Prophetstown 48-0 in Playoff Push
UPDATE: The Princeton Tigers delivered a stunning performance, blanking Erie-Prophetstown 48-0 in a decisive victory that secured their seventh consecutive playoff appearance. The game, held on October 27, 2023, at Bryant Field, showcased the Tigers’ dominance as they scored on all five first-half drives.
In a game that defined “Princeton football,” the Tigers bounced back from a rocky start to the season. Coach Ryan Pearson emphasized the importance of consistency, stating, “This was the most complete game we’ve played all year.” His team answered the challenge, demonstrating an explosive offense and a fierce defense against a playoff-bound opponent.
From the opening kickoff, the Tigers asserted their control. Quarterback Gavin Lanham orchestrated a six-play drive, culminating in a 14-yard touchdown from Brennen Emmett. Princeton quickly extended their lead with a safety following a botched punt snap by the Panthers, setting the tone for the game.
The Tigers maintained momentum, with Casey Etheridge scoring on a 7-yard touchdown after recovering a dropped snap. Etheridge’s breakout performance continued as he rushed for 213 yards and three touchdowns on just 14 carries, highlighting the team’s offensive prowess.
With the score at 35-0 by halftime, the running clock began early in the third quarter. Etheridge added another touchdown with a 15-yard run, further showcasing the Tigers’ relentless attack. The team finished with an impressive total of 416 rushing yards on 36 carries, without attempting a single pass.
Defensively, Princeton was suffocating, holding Erie-Prophetstown to just 2 rushing yards and 43 passing yards in the first half. Senior lineman Grady Cox played a pivotal role, intercepting a pass that led to a touchdown, and underscored the team’s focus: “We were waiting on this all season. We got it together. We’re ready for playoffs.”
The loss for Erie-Prophetstown snapped their four-game winning streak, leaving them at 6-3. Coach Tyler Whitebread acknowledged the need for his team to regroup, stating, “We couldn’t match their physicality… We have to refocus and play better.”
