Argentinians Cast Votes in Crucial Midterm Elections
Polls opened across Argentina on Sunday for legislative elections that will significantly impact President Javier Milei‘s ability to govern. The elections will determine whether his party, Liberty Advances (LLA), can expand its influence in parliament during the latter half of his term. Argentina is grappling with severe economic challenges, and the outcome could affect Milei’s controversial budget-slashing policies and his efforts to deregulate the economy.
Approximately 36 million eligible voters can cast their ballots from 08:00 to 18:00 (1100 to 2100 GMT), with preliminary results expected three hours after polls close. Currently, Milei’s party holds less than 15 percent of the seats in Congress, a share he hopes to increase to at least one-third. Achieving this target could provide him with some protection against opposition attempts to hinder his economic agenda.
Economic Context and Legislative Challenges
Since taking office in December 2023, Milei has pursued aggressive austerity measures aimed at reviving Argentina’s struggling economy. These measures include cutting tens of thousands of public sector jobs, freezing public works, and reducing spending on health, education, and pensions. While these austerity policies have reportedly slowed inflation by two-thirds, they have also contributed to increasing poverty levels and stagnating economic growth.
Critics have pointed out that a heavily overvalued peso is undermining Argentina’s competitiveness in the global market. In response to his detractors, Milei stated, “You cannot fix a hundred years of decline in 20 months.”
Voters will decide on renewing half of the 257-member Chamber of Deputies and a third of the 72 senators. Recent provincial elections in Buenos Aires have raised concerns regarding Milei’s popularity, as his allies faced significant losses. Political analysts are skeptical that he will achieve the one-third of seats needed to secure a majority for his party.
U.S. Support and Future Implications
The LLA currently holds only six senators and 37 deputies, which has limited Milei’s ability to implement key policies, including the privatization of state-owned companies. Compounding his challenges, members of Milei’s inner circle have been implicated in various scandals, further complicating his administration.
Despite these obstacles, Milei has received backing from U.S. President Donald Trump, whose administration pledged $40 billion in assistance. However, Trump has also cautioned that this support comes with conditions, warning that “if [Milei] loses, we are not going to be generous with Argentina.”
According to Mauricio Monge, a Latin America economist at Oxford Economics, the U.S. aid may not be sufficient to counteract the likelihood that election results will hinder further reforms. As he noted, “If history has taught us anything about Argentina, it’s that previous bailouts, when political support wanes, have proven futile.”
As Argentinians head to the polls, the election results will not only shape the future of Milei’s policies but also set the tone for the country’s economic direction amidst ongoing financial challenges.
