On November 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., the Art Gallery of Bancroft (AGB) will host a workshop titled “the Art of the Artist’s Critique,” facilitated by renowned artist Henry Melissa Gordon. This engaging workshop, priced at $45, is limited to six participants, ensuring an intimate and focused environment for artistic development.

The workshop aims to connect like-minded artists for a valuable experience in both giving and receiving critiques. Participants will explore their work through fresh perspectives, fostering growth in their artistic practice. This opportunity allows artists to overcome creative blocks and discover new directions in their work.

Henry Melissa Gordon emphasizes the importance of critique in an artist’s journey. In her words, “The critique is such an important tool for artists to learn and grow at any stage of their practice.” She highlights how these sessions can provide essential feedback, helping participants understand which comments resonate with their work, thus boosting their confidence.

“Artists receiving a critique will get to practice that crucial skill of learning to know which comments are meaningful to them,” Gordon stated.

To fully benefit from the workshop, participants are encouraged to bring two to three pieces of their artwork that represent their artistic style, along with a cellphone to record feedback. This hands-on approach not only enhances learning but also builds a supportive community among artists.

According to the AGB’s Facebook page, the workshop is designed to help artists articulate their thoughts about their own work and receive constructive feedback from peers. Fellow artist and AGB member Molly Moldovan expressed enthusiasm about Gordon’s return to the gallery after several years, stating, “This unique convergence of skills makes her the perfect leader for this type of workshop.” Moldovan believes that the workshop will serve as a confidence booster for artists at any stage of their careers.

Beyond the practical skills gained, Gordon sees this workshop as a chance to cultivate community among local artists. “When the formal time of learning is over, it can be so hard to find that space of expansion that comes from a critique,” she notes. “We visual artists can sometimes feel like we are in a rut with our work, and this workshop aims to rekindle that creative spark.”

With a maximum of six participants, the workshop promises a personalized experience. Should demand exceed capacity, organizers may consider scheduling an additional session.

For those interested in registering or seeking further information, details can be found on the AGB’s Facebook page, the gallery’s official website at www.artgallerybancroft.ca, or by emailing [email protected].

Gordon, who has a rich background as an artist and educator, brings a wealth of experience to this workshop. After emigrating from South Africa and studying in the UK, she returned to Canada, completing her Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art at the University of Waterloo 25 years ago. Following a lengthy hiatus focused on personal growth, she resumed her art practice in 2018.

The AGB, primarily volunteer-run, has played a central role in the vibrant North Hastings visual arts community for many years. Gordon encourages potential volunteers to engage with the gallery, stating that every role, no matter how small, contributes significantly to the community’s artistic landscape.

This workshop is a unique opportunity for artists to enhance their skills and foster connections within the arts community while benefiting from Gordon’s extensive knowledge and supportive approach.
