Victoria Secures Downtown YMCA/YWCA Pool During Crystal Pool Upgrade
The city of Victoria has announced plans to keep the Downtown YMCA/YWCA pool operational during the construction of the new Crystal Pool, ensuring that residents maintain access to aquatic facilities. This agreement involves collaboration with Concert Properties, the owner of the building housing the YMCA/YWCA.
The YMCA/YWCA is scheduled to relocate to the Bay Centre in early 2026. However, the new location will not feature a swimming pool, leading to concerns about pool access for the community. The city’s proactive approach means that while the YMCA/YWCA prepares for its move, its existing pool will remain available for use until work on the Crystal Pool begins in autumn 2026.
City’s Commitment to Community Needs
“We are thrilled to share this news,” stated Mayor Marianne Alto in a recent press release. She emphasized the city’s dedication to minimizing the impact of the upcoming Crystal Pool closure. This initiative is viewed as a significant win for pool users in Victoria, highlighting the city’s commitment to facilitating access to recreational facilities.
Derrick Newman, director of parks and recreation, noted the importance of ensuring continuous pool access for the community. “Our collaboration with Concert Properties and the YMCA/YWCA of Vancouver Island has enabled us to move forward with a creative solution that supports our residents while the new pool is being built,” he explained.
In addition to maintaining the pool, the city plans to enhance fitness and recreational programs at the YMCA/YWCA facility. This effort aims to provide residents with a variety of options to stay active during the construction period.
Progress on Crystal Pool Project
As plans for the replacement Crystal Pool advance, the city has reported that the project remains on schedule and within budget. The schematic design phase commenced in mid-October, and preliminary technical site studies have been completed. The city has also engaged project management services and is currently in the procurement process for construction management.
To further support the project, the city has applied for a grant of up to $7 million from the UBCM Strategic Priorities Fund. This funding will be crucial in helping to realize the vision for a new, modern aquatic facility that meets the needs of the community.
Overall, Victoria’s strategic approach to maintaining pool access during the transition period is a testament to the city’s commitment to its residents, ensuring that they continue to enjoy essential recreational facilities while new developments unfold.
