Lethbridge Swears in New Mayor and Council Members—Key Priorities Set
URGENT UPDATE: Lethbridge, Alberta, officially welcomes its new city council and mayor as a ceremony took place at City Hall on October 16, 2023. Mayor Blaine Hyggen is set to lead alongside eight councillors, six of whom are returning, marking a significant moment for the city.
The swearing-in ceremony highlighted a mix of experience and fresh perspectives. Mayor Hyggen expressed optimism for the upcoming term, stating, “It’s going to be a great four years… some great things we’ve done, but even more ahead.” His confidence reflects a commitment to continuing progress in the region.
Among the three new councillors is Rufa Doria, who makes history as Lethbridge’s first Filipino councillor. Doria, filled with pride, emphasized her top priorities: “Agriculture first, affordability, and safe neighbourhoods.” Her focus signifies the community’s pressing concerns and her eagerness to make impactful changes.
Ryan Wolfe, another new addition to the council, shares Doria’s commitment to addressing the community’s challenges. He stated, “There’s a lot of concern amongst our community about the cost of living… we really have to hunker down and take a hard look at where we’re spending money.” Wolfe’s focus on affordability resonates with many residents struggling to make ends meet.
The third new councillor, Al Beeber, brings over 40 years of journalism experience to the council. He recognizes the complexities of balancing taxes and services, stating, “We need to look at those taxes, but we also need to make sure we have the services, and that’s going to cost money.” His insight is crucial as the council navigates these challenges over the next four years.
Despite the hurdles ahead, Mayor Hyggen believes the blend of seasoned councillors and new faces will benefit Lethbridge. He remarked on the enthusiasm of the newly elected members, stating, “I’ve had great conversations with the three new elected councillors… they were quite eager and quite excited to get serving.”
The newly sworn-in council will convene for their first meeting next month, where they will begin to tackle the pressing issues highlighted during the campaign. As the community watches, the focus will undoubtedly be on how these leaders plan to implement their priorities and respond to the needs of their constituents.
Stay tuned for further updates on the actions and decisions of Lethbridge’s new council as they embark on this significant journey.
