Mary Spencer Battles Mikaela Mayer for Three World Titles in Montreal
Three world titles are at stake as Canada’s Mary Spencer faces American Mikaela Mayer in a highly anticipated boxing match in Montreal on October 28, 2025. Spencer, the reigning WBA super-welterweight champion, is defending her title while the vacant WBC and WBO 154-pound belts are also on the line following the retirement of Norway’s Cecilia Braekhus.
At 40 years old, Spencer holds a professional record of 10 wins, 2 losses, and 0 draws, with six of those victories coming by knockout. She is moving up in weight to challenge Mayer, a former super-featherweight champion who currently holds the WBO welterweight title. Mayer, aged 35, is eager to elevate her status to a three-division champion and brings a professional record of 21 wins, 2 losses, and 0 draws, including five knockouts.
In discussing the upcoming fight, Spencer emphasized that her focus lies not on the titles but on the challenge Mayer presents. “I never really cared about championship belts, to be completely honest. I am excited to be in exciting fights,” she stated. Spencer believes the stylistic match between the two fighters will create an engaging bout. “I learned to box fighting people like Mikaela. An orthodox stalker, a little bit shorter than me, coming at me, throwing a lot of punches. This is what I love,” she added.
Spencer will enjoy a physical advantage, typically weighing around 160 pounds and cutting to make the 154-pound limit. “I’ll be back up to 160 come fight night, so I’ll have even more of a size advantage,” she noted.
Mayer, on the other hand, was not initially on Spencer’s radar. “She was never on my radar because I never imagined that she was coming up to my weight category,” Spencer explained. Mayer had been pursuing a welterweight unification match against Lauren Price, the reigning IBF, WBA, and WBC champion, but when negotiations fell through, she accepted the fight against Spencer.
Mayer is currently ranked ninth in The Ring’s women’s pound-for-pound rankings and sixth by ESPN. As she prepares for this pivotal fight, both fighters have been training intensively, with Spencer returning to her roots by spending time in Detroit and her hometown of Windsor for her training camp. She has reunited with her former assistant coach, Karo Ro, who was inducted into the International Women’s Boxing Hall of Fame in 2025.
Spencer has recently enjoyed a resurgence in her career, having won her last three fights. She captured the interim WBA super-welterweight title in September 2024 with a unanimous decision over Germany’s Naomi Mannes and was later elevated to full champion when Terri Harper vacated the title. Spencer defended her title successfully in April 2025 against former champion Ogleidis Suarez.
This match marks a significant milestone for both fighters. Spencer’s boxing journey began at the age of 17, and she has accumulated numerous accolades, including world amateur titles at 66 kilograms in 2005 and 2008, and at 75 kilograms in 2010. Notably, she represented Canada at the 2012 London Olympics.
Mayer also has Olympic experience, advancing to the quarterfinals at the 2016 Rio Games as a lightweight. After turning professional, she has captured multiple titles, including the WBO super-featherweight title in October 2020 and the WBO welterweight title in September 2024.
The co-main event in Montreal features Wilkens Mathieu from Quebec City, who remains undefeated at 14-0-0 with 10 knockouts, facing off against Shakeel Phinn, known as the Jamaican Juggernaut, who has a record of 27-3-2 with 17 knockouts. They will compete for the NABF and WBC Continental super-middleweight titles.
Additionally, Arthur Biyarslanov, a Toronto native and 2016 Olympian, will take on former IBF light-welterweight titleholder Sergey Lipinets from Russia in the undercard. Biyarslanov boasts an impressive record of 19 wins in his professional career.
As the boxing world turns its attention to Montreal, the clash between Spencer and Mayer promises to be an electrifying encounter, with both fighters aiming to solidify their legacies in the sport.
