Prince Albert Council Approves Homeless Shelter Development Permit
UPDATE: A significant step toward addressing homelessness in Prince Albert has just been confirmed. The city council voted 6-3 in favor of granting a development permit for a permanent homeless shelter, paving the way for immediate action. This decision was announced during a council meeting held on Monday, where approximately a dozen community members were present, though none voiced their opinions publicly.
The urgency of this initiative cannot be overstated. With homelessness on the rise, this shelter will provide 45 beds dedicated to those in need. Officials clarified that any future increase in bed capacity must receive explicit council approval, ensuring community oversight. Craig Guidinger, the Director of Community Services, emphasized, “Under no circumstances would the number of beds go up from 45 without going to city council first.”
This development comes with built-in safeguards. The council has instituted a contract zone with Sask Housing, focusing on crime reduction and comprehensive support services. The shelter will feature on-site addiction management referrals and housing support workers, addressing both immediate and long-term needs of residents.
Additionally, a neighbourhood support team will be established by the end of November to proactively address any community concerns that may arise as the shelter becomes operational. This is a critical measure aimed at ensuring the shelter integrates smoothly into the local environment.
In terms of operational management, the Prince Albert Grand Council (PAGC) will oversee the shelter, having previously taken over the operations of Stepping Stones, the temporary shelter that was managed by the YWCA until they stepped aside.
The final step before the shelter can open is the signing of a servicing agreement with the province. This agreement is anticipated to be completed swiftly as the city works diligently to bring this essential resource online.
As this project progresses, it will significantly impact the lives of vulnerable individuals in Prince Albert. The community stands to benefit from a structured approach to homelessness, underscoring the importance of collaboration between local government and support organizations.
Stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops. The Prince Albert community is on the brink of a transformative change in how it addresses homelessness, and this news is likely to resonate widely.
