Local Author Challenges Leadership Norms with New Book

Shelburne author and resident Alethia O’Hara-Stephenson has published a new book, The Distinctive Leader, which aims to redefine leadership and inspire change among leaders across various sectors. O’Hara-Stephenson asserts that leadership transcends titles and positions, urging individuals to consider their legacy and the impact they have on others.
In her own words, O’Hara-Stephenson emphasizes that “this is not another leadership book that you read and set down somewhere and forget about.” She describes it as a “transformational manifesto” that encourages leaders to reflect on their service to others and the legacies they leave behind. “What is your legacy leaving behind?” she asks, prompting readers to think critically about their roles as leaders.
Redefining Leadership
O’Hara-Stephenson challenges the notion that leadership is merely a function of authority. Instead, she highlights the importance of service, stating, “A leader is the person who dedicates their time to service. It’s someone who takes pride in the work they do for others.” This perspective shifts the focus from conventional leadership roles to a more personal and impactful form of guidance.
The book addresses key topics such as building confidence in leaders and recognizing barriers that can undermine that confidence. O’Hara-Stephenson notes that issues of inequality, including gender and pay equity, continue to impede progress for many aspiring leaders. Drawing on her own experiences, she discusses the stereotypes and stigmas often faced by women of color in leadership positions. She recalls the “angry black woman” stereotype and the societal perceptions surrounding her natural hair, questioning the standards that deem these traits unprofessional.
Through this exploration, O’Hara-Stephenson aims to encourage leaders to challenge established norms and engage in meaningful conversations about what constitutes professionalism and leadership.
Empowerment and Self-Reflection
A significant aspect of The Distinctive Leader is its focus on self-reflection and personal growth. O’Hara-Stephenson includes reflective questions at the end of each chapter, designed to help readers digest the material and consider their own leadership journeys. Topics such as imposter syndrome and burnout are addressed, with practical steps suggested for overcoming these challenges.
O’Hara-Stephenson hopes that her insights will inspire readers to embrace their authenticity and foster confidence in their leadership abilities. “Even people at the top don’t have all the answers,” she reflects, emphasizing that leadership is fundamentally about growth and impact rather than simply holding a position.
The book serves as a resource for individuals at any level of leadership, offering valuable perspectives that can uplift and expand their understanding of what it means to lead effectively.
The Distinctive Leader is now available for purchase at BookLore in Orangeville and on Amazon.ca. O’Hara-Stephenson invites all readers to explore her work and discover their own paths to distinctive leadership.
