Vancouver Canucks’ Lankinen Sets NHL Record in Shootouts
UPDATE: Vancouver Canucks goalie Kevin Lankinen has just made NHL history with an astonishing shootout performance. In a thrilling matchup against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night, Lankinen solidified his status as the league’s best shootout goaltender, stopping all seven shots he faced this season, and boasting a perfect record.
The urgency of Lankinen’s accomplishment cannot be overstated. He now holds the best shootout save percentage in NHL history among goalies with at least 10 games played. Throughout his career, he has successfully stopped 38 of 44 shootout attempts, making him an invaluable asset for the Canucks.
“This guy always wants shootouts,” said teammate Jake DeBrusk after the Canucks’ win. “He practices it a lot.” Lankinen’s determination and skill in high-pressure situations have proven crucial for the Canucks, who currently have two victories this season, both secured in shootouts.
The Canucks are not just relying on Lankinen; they are part of an elite group this season. Alongside the Ottawa Senators and the Philadelphia Flyers, they are one of the only teams with more than one shootout win. The team’s five shootout victories dating back to last season are tied for the fifth-most in the NHL.
While the Canucks face challenges this season, including a middling record and goal-scoring issues, their shootout prowess offers them a competitive edge. “Lanks is a true pro, and so is Demmer,” said Adam Foote after the game. “They study the shooters, they study the game. It’s no fluke that he did what he did tonight.”
Fans and analysts alike are keeping a close watch on Lankinen as he continues to break records and display exceptional skill under pressure. The stakes are high, and every game brings new opportunities for the Canucks as they aim for glory in the NHL.
As this season unfolds, all eyes will be on Vancouver’s goaltending duo to see if they can maintain their remarkable performance in future shootouts. Stay tuned for more updates on Lankinen’s record-breaking journey and the Canucks’ quest for success.
