Surrey Family Launches Annual Toy Drive to Honor Late Brother
A Christmas toy drive initiated by a Surrey family to honor the memory of their late brother is set to begin on November 12, 2024. The annual event, known as Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive, supports the Salvation Army and marks its fifth year of operation. Launched in 2021, the drive aims to carry forward the spirit of giving exemplified by Vinny Maan, who passed away in 2019.
Since its inception, the toy drive has generated over $120,000 worth of toys. According to Pinder Saran, Vinny’s sister and the organizer of the initiative, “Vinny was full of life—joyful, generous, kind, and lighthearted. He especially cherished the holiday season.” Saran emphasized her brother’s love for the holidays, stating he enjoyed the lights, music, family gatherings, and, most importantly, bringing joy to children.
All toys collected during this year’s drive will be donated to Boundless Vancouver, a Salvation Army program that operates a pop-up toy shop. This shop allows parents to select gifts for their children, ensuring that the spirit of giving reaches families in need. The drive will accept new, unwrapped toys at various drop-off locations across the Lower Mainland from November 12 to December 10. The specific locations for toy drop-offs will be announced on the Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive Facebook and Instagram pages.
Businesses can support the drive in several ways. Saran encourages them to host collection bins, promote the initiative via social media and posters, incentivize donations, and incorporate the drive into workplace events. Additionally, partnerships with suppliers and sponsorship of employee donations are welcomed.
Uncle Vinny’s Toy Drive has recently achieved the status of a registered charity. Saran noted that “What began in 2021 as a heartfelt family initiative to honor the life and legacy of Vinny Maan has now grown into a recognized charitable organization—dedicated to spreading joy and hope to children during the holiday season and beyond.” This new status will allow the organization to provide official donation receipts, expand its outreach within the local community, and strengthen business partnerships.
For those interested in donating or getting involved, contributions can be made via Canada Helps at canadahelps.org/en/dn/136836. Individuals wishing to assist or seek further information can contact the organization at [email protected].
