Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement Sets Post-Season Hits Record Amid Heartbreak
URGENT UPDATE: In a stunning turn of events, Ernie Clement of the Toronto Blue Jays has broken the record for the most hits in a single Major League Baseball post-season, achieving a total of 30 hits during the 2025 playoffs. However, this incredible milestone is overshadowed by the Blue Jays’ heartbreaking loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a dramatic Game 7, where they fell 5-4 after 11 innings.
Clement’s record-breaking performance, surpassing Randy Arozarena’s 29 hits in 2020, came during a tense playoff run that saw him hitting an impressive .411 this post-season. Despite his personal achievement, Clement expressed deep sadness over the loss and a strong bond with his teammates. “I don’t really care about it,” he said, tears in his eyes, “I just love every single guy in here so much.”
The game turned dramatic in the bottom of the ninth when Clement had a crucial opportunity to win it for the Blue Jays with the bases loaded but ultimately flew out. “It was so much fun coming to work every day and battling with these guys,” he added, highlighting the emotional toll of the loss. “We have so much to be proud of, even though it didn’t go our way.”
Clement’s journey to this moment has been remarkable. Drafted in the fourth round by the Cleveland Indians in 2017, he faced numerous challenges before finding a home with the Blue Jays. After being waived in 2023 by the Oakland Athletics, he was picked up by Toronto, where he established himself as a key player, appearing in 157 games in 2025.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised Clement’s performance, stating, “Unbelievable run that he was on this entire post-season. He’s turned himself into an everyday Major Leaguer that is going to contribute to win a world championship.” Schneider also expressed hope for Clement to win a Gold Glove award for his exceptional play.
Despite the loss, Clement’s statistics tell a different story. He achieved a remarkable .276 average with 22 home runs and 111 RBIs in three seasons with the Blue Jays, serving as a testament to his growth and resilience. “I’ve always believed in myself,” Clement reflected, emphasizing the importance of perseverance throughout his career.
The emotional weight of the game continues to resonate within the Blue Jays’ clubhouse. Clement, now processing the end of the season, shared, “The only thing I can think of right now is spending this last night with all the boys. I’m just going to miss them in the off-season.”
As fans and players alike grapple with the end of the season, Clement’s story serves as a reminder of the highs and lows of sports, and the enduring bonds formed along the way. This developing story will continue to evolve as the off-season progresses.
