URGENT UPDATE: Winnipeggers have just rallied to crush over 3,000 kg of pumpkins during the fifth annual pumpkin drop at CF Polo Park on October 29, 2023. Hosted by Compost Winnipeg, this event is part of a growing movement to divert holiday waste from landfills, and the response has been overwhelming.

The pumpkin drop began early Sunday, with participants tossing their jack-o-lanterns from the second level of the parkade directly into a collection truck. Over the first two hours, the team collected more than 1,000 pumpkins compared to last year, according to event coordinator Karrie Blackburn. “This year we’re doing very well. We’re incredibly busy,” Blackburn stated.

The collected pumpkins will be repurposed based on their condition. Those suitable for human consumption will be sent to the Leftovers Foundation to be transformed into food. Meanwhile, Little Red Barn Micro Sanctuary will receive a truckload for its animals, and the remaining pumpkins will be sent to Lawn Stylists for composting.

If you missed today’s event, there are still options for composting your pumpkins. Blackburn emphasized, “You can put it in your backyard bin to keep it out of the landfill, or you can send it to the City of Winnipeg leaf and yard waste.”

There are three official drop-off sites available: Dakota Community Centre, Lindenwood Community Centre, and Valley Gardens Community Centre. “Ultimately, keep those pumpkins out of the landfill,” Blackburn urged.

This initiative not only helps reduce waste but also underscores the community’s commitment to sustainability. As of 1 p.m. on Sunday, the event had successfully diverted approximately 3,000 kg of pumpkins from the landfill, demonstrating the power of collective action in Winnipeg.
