Brad Lambert Scores First NHL Goal, Boosts Jets in Victory
Rookie forward Brad Lambert made a significant impact in his ninth NHL game, scoring his first goal during the Winnipeg Jets’ 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. Lambert’s achievement not only marked a personal milestone but also contributed to the team’s success on the ice.
Reflecting on the moment, Lambert expressed how it surpassed his childhood dreams. “I’ve been dreaming of that moment,” he stated. “When you’re playing road hockey as a kid, you envision those moments, so it’s pretty special.” The goal came from a well-placed pass by Parker Ford, who maneuvered behind the net before setting up Lambert at the back post.
The goal also represented a moment of relief for Lambert, who had previously missed a golden opportunity to score against the Chicago Blackhawks on December 7, 2022, when his shot from the slot went wide. Ford, who has frequently played alongside Lambert with the Manitoba Moose, celebrated his first NHL assist in tandem with Lambert’s milestone. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Lambert remarked about their connection on the goal.
As the Jets prepare for the return of captain Adam Lowry, who is recovering from a hip injury, Lambert’s timing couldn’t be better. The competition for ice time intensifies with fellow forwards Nikita Chibrikov and Cole Koepke also vying for a position in the lineup. Lambert’s ability to create offensive opportunities, even while playing on the fourth line, underscores his potential to contribute to the team’s scoring efforts moving forward.
In addition to his scoring prowess, Lambert demonstrated his speed and effectiveness, enhancing his role in the game. His performance is crucial as the Jets anticipate the return of Cole Perfetti later this month, which could further limit opportunities for players in the bottom lines.
“Regardless of whether they’re going in or not, you try to play your game,” Lambert acknowledged. “But 100 percent, it gives you more confidence.” Scoring his first goal not only alleviates the pressure he felt but also allows him to focus on solidifying his place within the team.
The game also held personal significance for Lambert, as it marked his first matchup against Penguins captain Sidney Crosby. Lambert shared, “Every kid that comes in the league now has followed him ever since they were three or four years old. He’s been a big idol of mine growing up.” This experience added to the excitement of his first NHL goal.
Teammate Kyle Connor, who scored twice during the game, praised the efforts of the younger players stepping up amid injuries. “They’ve done a great job, all three of those guys,” Connor said. “Each one of them brings a different element. It’s fun; you need that to contribute.”
Jets head coach Scott Arniel has consistently noted the promise shown by Lambert, Ford, and Chibrikov, even when offensive production has been limited. He expressed satisfaction in seeing Lambert rewarded for his efforts. “Everybody’s pretty appreciative and excited for him to get that,” Arniel remarked.
As Lambert navigates this pivotal moment in his career, he remains focused on continuing to improve and secure his position on the NHL roster. “Now that this first is out of the way, I can go back to work,” he said, ready to tackle the challenges ahead.
Following the game, Lambert humorously noted that he was still searching for his clothes, presumably the result of a prank by his teammates. “I have yet to find out what’s going on,” he said.
In a separate incident during the game, Evgeni Malkin of the Penguins received a fine of $5,000 for a slashing penalty against Jets defenceman Logan Stanley during the first period.
As Lambert continues to build on this momentum, the Winnipeg Jets look forward to further contributions from their promising young talent in the upcoming matches.
