Brandon University Hosts Speaker Series and Sports Events This Week
Brandon University is hosting a series of engaging events this week, including a significant talk by Anishinaabe writer and University of Manitoba professor Niigaan Sinclair and various athletic competitions. These activities reflect the university’s commitment to cultural enrichment and community engagement.
Niigaan Sinclair will deliver a presentation titled “Why Indigenous Art and the Art Gallery Aren’t Friends” as part of the Visual Art Speaker Series. The talk is scheduled for today, running from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 2006 of Clark Hall. Sinclair’s insights are expected to provoke thoughtful discussions on the intersection of Indigenous art and institutional frameworks.
In sports, the Bobcats women’s soccer team is competing in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association national championship this week in Windsor, Ontario. The team will face the top-ranked Aigles d’Ahuntsic in a quarter-final match on Wednesday at 16:00. Fans can follow the team’s progress on the university’s athletics website, GoBobcats.ca.
The Bobcats basketball teams will also be active this weekend. They will host matches against the University of Calgary on Friday and Saturday, with game times set for 18:00 and 20:00 on Friday, and 17:00 and 19:00 on Saturday. Meanwhile, the volleyball teams will be competing against the University of Saskatchewan on the road.
Additionally, the university will feature a talk by Brandon Edwards of Ducks Unlimited at this week’s Science Seminar Series. Edwards will discuss the interplay between statistics, computer science, mathematics, and avian ecology. This presentation will begin at 14:30 in Room 4-47 of the Brodie building and will also be available for online viewing. Interested participants can email [email protected] for more information.
As the semester progresses, Brandon University will observe its fall study break from November 10 to 14, 2025. During this period, classes will be suspended, with regular sessions resuming on Monday, November 17.
Meanwhile, Assiniboine College is also marking important events. The college will celebrate its 65th anniversary with a launch and time capsule unveiling on Wednesday at 09:00 at the Victoria Avenue East Campus. Details can be found at assiniboine.net/events.
On Thursday, the college will host “The Sweet Affair,” an evening dedicated to desserts and specialty drinks, running from 19:00 to 20:30 at the Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts located at 1035 First St. North. This event offers a delightful opportunity for attendees to unwind and socialize.
The college’s alumni association is organizing a mixer for alumni and friends on Thursday at Obsolete Brewing Co. in Dauphin. Additional information is available at assiniboine.net/events.
For sports enthusiasts, the Cougars women’s hockey team will be on the road this week, with some games available for online viewing. Updates on Cougars athletics can be found at assiniboine.net/athletics.
