Erie Photographer Steve Sullivan Captures Products and Moments

Erie-based photographer Steve Sullivan has built a remarkable career over more than three decades, creating images that not only showcase products but also tell compelling stories. As a commercial photographer, his work reaches consumers through various platforms, including grocery flyers, magazines, and online content. Since launching his freelance business, Steve Sullivan Photography, in 2007, he has collaborated with numerous high-profile clients, capturing images that entice customers to engage with their products.
Having graduated from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale in 1991, Sullivan has honed his skills in both product photography and portraiture. His artistic journey began in Rock Island, where he worked for a professional photography studio before transitioning to freelance work. In 1999, he and his wife, Tori, relocated to Erie to be closer to her family, establishing a studio adjacent to their home.
Sullivan’s portfolio boasts an impressive array of clients, including major retailers such as Walmart and Cabela’s, as well as local businesses like John Deere and Erie Foods. His photographs have graced the pages of print and digital advertisements, helping companies effectively market their products. “It’s got to make you stop,” Sullivan emphasizes, noting the importance of capturing attention through striking visuals.
His process involves close collaboration with stylists and sales representatives during photo shoots. They provide direction, while Sullivan focuses on the technical aspects, adjusting lighting and camera settings to create visually appealing images. With nearly 35 years of experience, he has developed a reputation for reliability and professionalism. “I show up and I do what they ask,” he explains. “I won’t tell you I’m the best, but I’ve been doing this a long time.”
In addition to product photography, Sullivan captures candid moments and professional portraits, showcasing the individuals behind the brands. His recent work includes assignments for American Rental Properties and events for John Deere, such as a heartwarming experience for a child and family participating in the Make-A-Wish program. “I’m going around looking for smiles,” Sullivan reflects on his approach to capturing genuine moments.
Sullivan’s photography journey has evolved alongside technological advancements. He recalls a time when dark rooms were essential for developing film, and now embraces the digital revolution. While younger photographers often rely heavily on software like Photoshop, Sullivan draws on his extensive experience to find creative solutions on set. For instance, he once enhanced a photograph by using graphite from a pencil to make a glass etching stand out, demonstrating that traditional techniques still hold value today.
When not engaged in commercial projects, Sullivan explores his artistic side through cyanotype photography, a technique that produces striking blue and white images. Since April 2024, he has been experimenting with this cameraless method, capturing natural objects like leaves and grass. His work is showcased at The Loft on Main in Morrison and has been featured in art galleries, further expanding his creative portfolio.
“I’ve had a blast,” he shares, reflecting on his renewed passion for this artistic form. Sullivan’s dedication to his craft and willingness to adapt have allowed him to thrive in a competitive field. “I plan to keep doing it,” he asserts, emphasizing his commitment to continuous learning and collaboration with others.

Whether capturing products in the spotlight or delving into artistic endeavors, Steve Sullivan’s photography remains a captivating journey of storytelling through images.
