Winnipeg Jets Suffer 3-0 Loss in LA Despite Lowry’s Return
UPDATE: The Winnipeg Jets faced a disappointing start to their longest road trip of the season, suffering a 3-0 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on October 24, 2023, in a game marked by missed opportunities and a lack of offensive firepower.
Despite the return of captain Adam Lowry to the lineup for the first time this season, the Jets struggled to generate significant scoring chances. This defeat marks Winnipeg’s first road loss while simultaneously giving L.A. their first home victory of the season.
The Jets thought they had opened the scoring just over eight minutes into the game when a shot from Josh Morrissey was inadvertently redirected into the net by Kings goalie Darcy Kuemper. However, officials ruled that Gabriel Vilardi had interfered with Kuemper, leading to a disallowed goal. In a surprising turn, the Jets challenged the call, which was upheld, resulting in a penalty against Winnipeg that was quickly negated when Anze Kopitar was called for high-sticking.
As the game progressed, the Kings capitalized on a defensive lapse by the Jets. At the 17:08 mark of the first period, Joel Armia set up Adrian Kempe, who scored from close range to give Los Angeles a 1-0 lead. The Kings maintained this edge heading into the second period, outshooting the Jets 7-5 in the first frame.
The second period saw both teams fail to capitalize on power play opportunities, with L.A. outshooting Winnipeg 11-8. The Jets’ struggles continued in the third period as they missed two additional power play chances, further compounding their frustrations.
Midway through the third, the Jets found themselves in penalty trouble. Parker Ford received a minor for shooting the puck over the glass, followed closely by Vladislav Namestnikov taking a double-minor for high-sticking. The Kings took advantage of this opportunity, with Kevin Fiala scoring with just 46 seconds left in the double-minor, extending the lead to 2-0.
In a last-ditch effort, the Jets pulled goalie Connor Hellebuyck with under three minutes remaining. However, Drew Doughty sealed the game with an empty-net goal at the 54-second mark, finalizing the score at 3-0. Hellebuyck made 23 saves while Kuemper recorded a shutout with a matching 23 saves.
Lowry played over 14 minutes in his season debut, contributing four hits, two blocked shots, and one shot on goal but struggled in the faceoff circle, winning just one of 13 draws.
The Jets will look to regroup as they continue their west-coast swing, facing the San Jose Sharks this Friday night. Fans are eagerly awaiting whether Lowry’s presence can spark a turnaround for the team. Stay tuned for updates as this developing story unfolds.
