The Tragically Hip Joins Forces with Boi-1da for World Cup Album
In an exciting collaboration, Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip has partnered with acclaimed producer Boi-1da to create a FIFA World Cup-themed album. This initiative, part of the Perfect Pitch program, aims to raise funds for the Canada Soccer Foundation, which supports youth soccer programs across the nation. The album is set to release in June 2024, just ahead of the tournament kickoff.
Bringing Together Canadian Talent
Joining The Tragically Hip and Boi-1da are other prominent Canadian artists, including Alessia Cara, Nelly Furtado, Charlotte Cardin, Loud Luxury, and Zeds Dead. Boi-1da expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “It’s going to be amazing. I’m very excited to work with all these people … I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.”
As a gesture of support for the cause, The Tragically Hip has granted Boi-1da complete access to their music catalog. Guitarist Rob Baker explained, “We’ve given him carte blanche because it’s for a cause we really believe in, which is promoting soccer in Canada and raising awareness of this global event in Toronto.”
The album will feature a mix of original tracks, reimagined classics, and collaborations across various genres. Boi-1da noted, “I’m happy my country has so much talent … It’s going to be fun. It’s been amazing so far.”
Personal Connections to Soccer
Rob Baker is not just a musician; he is also a passionate soccer fan and coach. He has shared many memorable moments watching matches with his son, Boris, who plays bass for the band Kasador and previously played semi-professionally for Kingston United SC. Together, they have attended numerous Canadian World Cup qualifiers and international games.
Baker’s deep connection to soccer fuels his excitement for the album. He stated, “I think that’s so exciting. Our music becomes a flavor, an ingredient. Whatever he’s going to cook up.” This collaborative spirit is evident, as Boi-1da plans to blend classic elements from The Tragically Hip into fresh, modern sounds. “Taking something classic from them and remaking it into something modern and new is one of my ideas,” he shared.
Boi-1da, born Matthew Samuels in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in Toronto, has received numerous accolades, including nominations for 19 Grammy Awards. Earlier this year, he was awarded the 2025 Juno International Achievement Award for his significant contributions to the music industry. His previous work includes hit songs like Drake’s “God’s Plan” and Rihanna’s “Work.”
A Collaborative Future
The Perfect Pitch project is a partnership between Canada Soccer and Infinity &, a Toronto-based entertainment agency. Samantha Rogers, Vice-President of Philanthropy at Canada Soccer, expressed gratitude to the participating artists, stating, “Together, they’re helping us tell the story of our sport in a new way, one that is truly representative of Canada.”
This is not the first time The Tragically Hip has used their platform for a good cause. The band previously collaborated with Rugby Canada to support the women’s team ahead of the recent Rugby World Cup in England. Baker emphasized the band’s commitment to such initiatives, saying, “It’s something we will continue to do.”
As the countdown to the FIFA World Cup continues, the anticipation for this unique musical project grows. The collaboration between The Tragically Hip and Boi-1da promises to deliver an album that celebrates both Canadian music and soccer, captivating fans around the world.
