A business in Shallow Lake has initiated a fundraising campaign to support local children and youth in need of essential winter items. The campaign, titled Fill the Fuel Tank, was launched by Alexina and Brian Akins of the Good Times Motorcycle Company (GT Cycle) on December 6, 2023. The goal is to raise funds for the United Way of Bruce Grey’s Hope for Our Kids Fund, which addresses various critical needs for the youth in the community.

The Hope for Our Kids Fund provides support for warm winter clothing, nutritious food and snacks, school supplies, and educational assistance. Additionally, it extends help during the holiday season. “We believe every child deserves to feel safe, warm, and cared for—especially during the holidays,” said Alexina Akins in an email statement. “Sadly, many local families across Grey-Bruce are struggling with the rising cost of living and can’t always provide the basics their children need. That’s where the Hope for Our Kids Fund makes a real difference.”

Fundraising Campaign Details

The Fill the Fuel Tank campaign will run until December 22, 2023, with all funds raised going directly to support local children and families through Bruce Grey Child and Family Services. The Akins aim to raise a total of $3,000 to ensure that more than just fuel tanks are filled; they aspire to fill hearts with hope and homes with comfort.

Those interested in contributing to the campaign can donate online through CanadaHelps or in person at GT Cycle, located at 271 Princess St. in Shallow Lake. The Akins encourage community members to participate in this initiative to help local youth experience a brighter holiday season.

As winter approaches, the need for support becomes even more pressing. Community-driven efforts like the Fill the Fuel Tank campaign play a vital role in addressing the challenges faced by families in the region. With the Akins’ commitment and the community’s support, many children in Shallow Lake will benefit from this generous initiative.
