UPDATE: Communities along Newfoundland’s Irish Loop are reeling from a devastating weather bomb that struck on October 24, 2023. As residents assess damage and begin recovery efforts, urgent reports confirm that power and cell service were lost around 8 p.m. N.T., devastating local infrastructure.

In Trepassey, two families were evacuated when fierce winds gusted up to 171 km/h, causing waves to crash through the town’s breakwater. Although damage to homes and businesses remained minimal, the loss of essential services has left the community vulnerable. Teams from Newfoundland Power and Bell Aliant are actively on-site today to evaluate repairs.

Meanwhile, in nearby St. Vincent’s, critical infrastructure has been severely impacted. A key road that connects parts of the town was washed out by waves reaching heights of up to 12 meters. Mayor Verna Hayward stated, “We really anticipated more damage. I’m glad we didn’t get it,” highlighting the community’s relief amid the chaos.

Authorities closed the causeway and several roads on Tuesday night as a precaution against the rising tides. On Wednesday, the Department of Transportation reopened the causeway to one lane of traffic, albeit covered with heavy, ocean-soaked sand. Hayward noted, “The wind is still very high. But it’s hard to stop Mother Nature, and those storms are getting stronger.”

Adding to the community’s distress, a fish plant in St. Mary’s was completely destroyed by fire amid the hurricane-force winds. The blaze engulfed the structure before emergency crews could respond, leaving many workers without jobs. “The storm damage is secondary. The road can be replaced, as well as the plant, but we never expected this,” said Hayward, expressing heartbreak for those impacted.

As residents of Trepassey and St. Vincent’s-St. Stephen’s-Peter’s River grapple with these challenges, the human impact is profound. “Our heart is really broken,” Hayward added, emphasizing the emotional toll on local families.
