URGENT UPDATE: BC Hydro has just announced a new initiative offering customers a $100 credit to help offset rising utility bills as cold weather hits Metro Vancouver. Starting November 1, 2025, and running through January 1, 2026, customers can log into their online accounts to participate in a reduction challenge aimed at lowering their hydro usage by 10 percent over the next year.

This is a unique opportunity for customers to earn a credit or e-transfer that is double the usual reward. If successful in meeting the goal, participants will receive $100—a significant increase from the previous $50 reward. Last year, more than 75,000 B.C. residents activated the reward, achieving energy savings of 19 gigawatt hours, enough to power over 2,500 homes for an entire year.

IMPORTANT: The highest number of activations came from the Lower Mainland, where over 47,000 customers took on the challenge. BC Hydro assures customers that reducing energy usage by 10 percent is easier than it sounds, providing several practical tips, including:

– Utilize a programmable thermostat to lower heating when away or sleeping
– Seal drafts around windows and doors to prevent heat loss
– Switch to LED bulbs
– Use energy-efficient appliances
– Install low-flow shower heads
– Wash clothes in cold water
– Opt for smaller appliances instead of the oven when possible

By joining the Team Power Smart initiative, customers can also gain access to additional contests and discounts throughout the year, enhancing their savings potential.

This program comes as the B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Low Carbon Innovation previously provided an affordability credit, offering average savings of $100 for residential customers. However, that credit program ended earlier this year, making this new offer even more timely and relevant for residents facing increasing energy costs.

As temperatures drop, now is the time to take action and potentially earn credits while reducing energy consumption. Customers are encouraged to visit the BC Hydro website to learn more about the challenge and how to sign up before the deadline.

Stay tuned for updates as this initiative unfolds—don’t miss your chance to save!
