Cambridge Musician Launches Picture Book Inspired by War Brides
BREAKING NEWS: Cambridge musician Allison Lupton has just launched a picture book inspired by her poignant song about war brides, Over the Ocean to Canada. The book was unveiled during a special concert at the Central Presbyterian Church in Cambridge on July 15, 2023, at 7 p.m.
Lupton was deeply moved by an exhibit at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in Halifax, where she learned about the brave young women who found love amidst the turmoil of war. “I was so taken by the stories of young people finding love in a time of such darkness,” she stated. This emotional experience sparked the creation of her song, originally recorded in 2014.
The new picture book, which doubles as a songbook, features illustrations by fellow musician and artist Ian Bell. Lupton expresses her joy at how Bell has captured the essence of her song in his artwork, adding delightful touches like a hidden cat on each page. “It’s delightful what he has done,” Lupton shared.
Bell, who has performed the song alongside Lupton, noted the unique challenge of illustrating a song compared to a novel. “You understand the feeling of it,” he said, emphasizing the narrative element in both music and art. His illustrations reflect powerful moments from the song, including scenes of young women coping with wartime challenges.
The book’s launch event, titled The Road Home, promises a night filled with music and storytelling, featuring renowned CBC host Tom Allen and other talented musicians. “I hope it’s an evening of gathering together in singing together and having a laugh,” Lupton said, inviting the community to join in the celebration.
The picture book aims to resonate with young audiences and foster an appreciation for the history of war brides. Lupton’s dedication to merging music with literature highlights her belief in the profound impact both can have on people’s lives.
As the community gathers for this significant event, the emotional connection of Lupton’s work is sure to inspire and engage attendees. The concert not only marks the release of a book but also brings people together in remembrance of a vital part of history.
Stay tuned for more updates on this inspiring project and the ongoing celebration of love and resilience during challenging times.
