Riders Secure Grey Cup Spot in Thrilling 24-21 Victory over Lions
UPDATE: The Saskatchewan Roughriders have clinched a spot in the Grey Cup following a dramatic 24-21 victory over the B.C. Lions in the West Division final, held at Mosaic Stadium in Regina on November 8, 2025. With just minutes left on the clock, head coach Corey Mace made a pivotal decision that propelled his team to a historic win.
As the Riders trailed by seven points with less than three minutes remaining, Mace opted for a field goal instead of a potential game-tying touchdown. The crowd of 33,350 erupted as kicker Brett Lauther successfully converted a 13-yard field goal, narrowing the Lions’ lead to 21-17.
Mace reflected on his choice, stating, “I totally get [the booing]. Just have faith.” His trust in his team was immediately rewarded as the Saskatchewan defense held the Lions to consecutive two-and-out possessions. With only 1:03 left, quarterback Trevor Harris orchestrated a swift 74-yard drive in just seven plays, culminating in a game-winning touchdown pass to wide receiver Tommy Nield with a mere 11 seconds remaining.
Reflecting on the game, Harris remarked, “I trust Corey Mace. He knows what he’s doing.” The confidence between coach and players was palpable, a key element as the Riders now prepare for the upcoming 112th Grey Cup in Winnipeg against the Montreal Alouettes. The Riders and Alouettes have faced off twice this season, with Saskatchewan securing a 34-6 victory in their first encounter but falling 48-31 in the second.
Veteran running back A.J. Ouellette has already begun mentoring teammates for the challenges ahead, emphasizing the need for focus amidst the distractions of the Grey Cup. “There’s gonna be a lot of distractions. You gotta stay grounded,” Ouellette advised.
Mace expressed excitement for the upcoming matchup, eager to analyze game film from the Alouettes’ 19-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger Cats in the East Final. “We have an opportunity to do something that we set out to do since training camp,” Mace said, rallying his team for the significant challenge ahead.
With the victory still fresh in their minds, the Riders are set to make their move towards Grey Cup glory, igniting hope and enthusiasm among fans and players alike. As Harris put it, “I think it’s our time.”
Stay tuned for more updates as the Riders prepare to face the Alouettes, aiming to bring home the championship trophy.
