American Legion Commander Inspires at DAR Meeting in Henry
URGENT UPDATE: American Legion Commander Roger Masters delivered a powerful address at the Chief Senachwine Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) meeting on November 1, 2023, at the Henry Public Library. This event is not just a reflection on the past; it is a call to honor and remember those who served.
Masters, a Master Sgt. veteran with service in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan, captivated attendees by opening with the iconic song “Yankee Doodle.” He shared his military experiences and discussed the significant history and principles of the American Legion, emphasizing the importance of community engagement today.
During the meeting, Masters highlighted upcoming events, including a solemn observance of Veterans Day on November 11. The ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. in Central Park, where the community will honor WWII Capt. John Cromwell and Black Hawk War veteran Abraham Lincoln. Following the ceremony, participants will proceed to Henry Cemetery to lay wreaths for DAR Real Daughter Clarissa McManners and Civil War veteran Lt. Peter Wykoff, reinforcing the chapter’s commitment to honoring local heroes.
In a heartwarming moment, Regent Jean Galetti shared a thank-you note from the Henry Food Pantry, acknowledging the chapter’s generous donation of 115 items in October. This act of service highlights the chapter’s ongoing dedication to supporting the community.
The meeting also featured reports from various chapter chairs. Community Classroom Chair Annette Lionberger announced a creative challenge for students to create “This Day in History” bulletin boards, fostering a connection with local history among the youth. Conservation Chair Barb Dahlbach discussed the mental and physical health benefits of “forest bathing,” encouraging members to embrace nature for wellness.
Looking ahead, the next chapter meeting is scheduled for Friday, December 1, 2023, at 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse, where a festive Christmas party and potluck will take place. Members are encouraged to bring a dish to share, while meat, punch, and tableware will be provided. The program will include a “Salute to Our Patriot Legacy,” creating an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans.
This gathering serves as a reminder of the vital role that organizations like the American Legion and DAR play in fostering community spirit and honoring our history. Stay tuned for more updates on events and initiatives that continue to shape the community of Henry.
