Brandon University Researcher Honored in Manitoba Legislature
Brandon University researcher Mousumi Majumder received recognition in the Manitoba Legislature for her pioneering efforts in developing a blood test aimed at early detection of breast cancer. This acknowledgment came during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, through a Member’s Statement delivered by Glen Simard, the MLA for Brandon East.
During the statement, Simard praised Majumder’s contributions, stating that her research is providing “hope to families here in Manitoba and around the world.” He emphasized the transformative nature of her work, highlighting that her team has discovered genetic markers in the blood that can indicate breast cancer before a tumor is visible via traditional imaging.
Groundbreaking Research and Its Impact
Majumder, who holds a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Genotoxicology, has been with Brandon University since 2016. Her research focuses on identifying microRNAs—small RNA molecules that may serve as biomarkers for early cancer detection. The goal is to create a non-invasive blood test that could complement existing mammogram screenings, enhancing the possibility of diagnosing the disease at its most treatable stages.
“Early detection saves lives,” Simard reiterated, underscoring the significance of Majumder’s findings. The recognition caught Majumder by surprise; she initially thought an email from the minister’s office was a scam after it landed in her spam folder. “When I finally called and they said, ‘Dr. Majumder, we’ve been desperately trying to reach you,’ that’s when it hit me—this was real,” she recalled.
During her visit to the legislature, Majumder expressed gratitude for the warm reception from MLAs across party lines, many of whom are alumni of Brandon University. “They treated me like a celebrity,” she noted, reflecting on the supportive atmosphere.
Future Challenges and Goals
Majumder emphasized that this recognition extends beyond her personal achievements; it is a testament to the hard work of her students and trainees. “When I stand there, I represent all of them—past, present, and future members of my lab. This recognition belongs to them,” she declared.
Her research aims to detect breast cancer through blood samples before physical symptoms manifest. “Our goal isn’t to replace mammograms but to support them,” she clarified. The initial findings indicate that specific microRNAs can identify breast cancer as early as stage one, which could revolutionize early diagnosis.
Yet, Majumder pointed out that substantial challenges remain. The current studies have analyzed around 300 samples, but to fully validate the findings, approximately 3,000 samples are needed. “That’s the next big challenge,” she stated, highlighting the necessity for sustained funding and support.
Simard also noted the broader implications of Majumder’s work for Manitobans, particularly those in rural and remote areas who face obstacles in accessing cancer screening services. He affirmed that advancements in early detection and lowering the screening age mean that Manitobans should no longer have to equate travel with receiving vital breast cancer services.
Majumder expressed her appreciation for her colleagues and the university community. “I see myself as only a researcher,” she said. “But this honour reflects years of hard work and the collective spirit of Brandon University. We are truly humbled and grateful.”
