Operation Red Nose Launches in Prince Albert for 13th Year

Operation Red Nose is set to return to the streets of Prince Albert on November 28 for its 13th consecutive year, providing a crucial service that aims to ensure safe transportation for party-goers during the holiday season. This free service will operate every weekend leading up to New Year’s Eve, with the local chapter once again hosted by the Lions Club.

Randy Braaten, the coordinator for the initiative, emphasized the need for volunteers to help maintain the efficiency of the service. Last year, 102 volunteers covered over 2,400 kilometers and successfully provided 148 rides to 347 clients, raising $7,700 for local elementary schools. “The more people we have come out, the faster we can get people picked up,” Braaten explained. He highlighted that demand peaks on New Year’s Eve, causing clients to wait in long queues for rides. More volunteers would allow for additional teams to be deployed, enhancing service speed.

The volunteer teams consist of an escort driver, a designated driver, and a navigator. An escort vehicle, provided by a local dealership, follows the designated driver to ensure clients and their vehicles return home safely. The escort vehicle also serves as a hub for volunteers to grab coffee and food during their shifts.

John Alexandersen, a long-time volunteer who primarily manages dispatch, shared his experiences. “I definitely enjoy giving the rides as well. It’s fun to get out there and interact with the patrons and get them home safe,” he said, underscoring the rewarding nature of the work.

The commitment from volunteers is flexible, allowing individuals to participate for one night or multiple weekends, making it an accessible way to contribute to community safety. “It’s fun, and you get to drive all sorts of different vehicles,” Braaten noted, encouraging more people to join the cause.

Since its establishment in 1984, Operation Red Nose has facilitated over 2.4 million safe rides across Canada, thanks to the dedication of approximately 1.7 million volunteers. The organization has also raised and distributed more than $36 million to support local youth and amateur sports programs.
