UPDATE: As Remembrance Day approaches, Calgary prepares to honor local hero William McKnight, a celebrated flying ace who served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. This year, his legacy is particularly poignant as thousands drive along McKnight Boulevard, named in his honor.

William McKnight, born in Edmonton in 1918 but raised in Calgary’s Crescent Heights neighborhood, made history as Canada’s highest-scoring ace of the Battle of Britain. Local historian Shelly McElroy emphasizes the significance of McKnight’s achievements, stating, “He was a very, very high-profile and dedicated and elite pilot.”

McKnight’s exceptional skills were evident as he downed 17 German planes, a feat that only a small fraction of pilots achieved. “Only about one in 100 fighter pilots ever became an ace,” McElroy noted, highlighting the rarity of such accomplishments.

Over the beach of Dunkirk, McKnight shot down 10 planes in a single engagement, earning him legendary status among his peers. His commanding officer, the renowned Douglas Bader, described him as a “flinty-eyed little dead-shot” and a fearless aviator. Tragically, McKnight’s life was cut short when his aircraft disappeared over the English Channel on January 12, 1941.

As we approach Remembrance Day on November 11, the community reflects on McKnight’s contributions and sacrifices. A presentation on his life will take place at the Central Public Library on November 18, 2025, where McElroy will share insights from her ongoing research into McKnight’s legacy.

The emotional impact of McKnight’s story resonates deeply as Canadians remember the sacrifices made for freedom. His legacy not only honors military bravery but also serves as a reminder of the personal stories behind every name on a memorial.

This Remembrance Day, as Canadians gather to pay tribute, McKnight’s contributions as a top flying ace will be at the forefront of local ceremonies. His story is a testament to the courage and dedication of those who served.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story and the upcoming events commemorating William McKnight’s remarkable life.
