High School Students Explore Agriculture and STEM Careers in Swift Current
High school students from across the southwest region gathered in Swift Current on October 24, 2023, for the second annual Careers in Agriculture and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) event. With approximately 60 attendees from grades 10 to 12, participation has significantly increased since the event was last held, tripling in size from two years ago.
Organized by the Chinook School Division, the Regina Education Industry Education Council, Great Plains College, and the Swift Current Research and Development Centre, the event ran from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Great Plains College, followed by an afternoon session at the Research Centre from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.. Mackenzie Veason, Recruitment Coordinator at Great Plains College, highlighted the growing interest, stating, “Two years ago, we had maybe 20 students, so the word seems to be getting out.”
The morning session at Great Plains College focused on careers in agriculture. Various businesses, including SWT, Patterson Ag, Next Gen Seeds, and Brett Young Seeds, set up interactive booths. These displays offered students a close-up look at the diverse job opportunities within the agricultural sector. Veason emphasized that a farming background is not a prerequisite for entering the agriculture industry.
Students also had the chance to learn about the college’s agriculture science programs, with current students showcasing their projects and experiences. This interactive approach aimed to inform high school attendees about the variety of pathways available in agriculture and STEM fields.
In the afternoon, students visited the Swift Current Research and Development Centre, where they explored several departments, including crop science, soil science, and cattle research. They engaged directly with scientists and staff, gaining insights into how these fields support farmers and enhance food production. Through hands-on discussions and demonstrations, students discovered the breadth of career options that agriculture and STEM can offer.
Financial support for this initiative came from the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a federal, provincial, and territorial initiative designed to promote agricultural development. The event not only highlighted the importance of agriculture but also aimed to inspire the next generation of professionals in these vital sectors. As the interest in agriculture careers continues to rise, events like this play a crucial role in bridging the gap between education and industry.
