Boston’s Annual Tree-Cutting Ceremony Set for This Morning
UPDATE: A special tree-cutting ceremony is happening NOW in Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia, as the beloved Tree for Boston is set to be cut down this morning. The event, scheduled for 10:30 a.m. at 49 Herman’s Island Rd., marks an important annual tradition symbolizing gratitude from Nova Scotia to Boston.
The tree, a majestic 13.7-metre white spruce, is a generous donation from former property owners Ronald and Claire Feener. “We planted this tree in our front yard over 40 years ago. To have this tree selected this year is a dream come true and an absolute honour,” the Feeners said, reflecting on their cherished memories of the tree decorated for Christmas.
This annual event not only showcases community spirit but also commemorates the Halifax Explosion of December 5, 1917, when Boston provided vital medical assistance to Nova Scotia. The explosion resulted in approximately 2,000 deaths and left many injured and homeless. This connection to Boston serves as a powerful reminder of support and solidarity between the two regions.
In addition to the tree-cutting, the ceremony will include a traditional smudging led by Holly Meuse from the L’sitkuk First Nation in Bear River, enhancing the cultural significance of the event.
The tree will later be transported to Boston, where it will be illuminated during the 84th annual tree-lighting ceremony at the Boston Common on December 4 at 7 p.m.
This event is not just a festive occasion; it is a heartfelt tribute that resonates deeply with the communities involved. Stay tuned for updates and coverage of this significant ceremony.
