Tootoo Fotheringham Makes College Hockey Debut with Penmen

As a member of the fourth seed in their division and with a recruiting class ranked 12th in the country this past summer, expectations are high for Fotheringham and the Penmen this season. “From what I’ve seen so far, we’re more of a defensive team,” he noted, emphasizing the coaches’ focus on positioning and simplicity in gameplay.

Alongside his athletic pursuits, Fotheringham is performing well academically, maintaining marks in the mid-90s, but anticipates a challenging second semester. “I’m confident I’ll be able to handle the pace both on and off the ice,” he stated.

The connection to his heritage also plays a role in Fotheringham’s experience, as he often gets questions about his famous relative. “It’s cool because people learn something new when they ask me,” he shared, referencing how the name Tootoo opens doors for discussion about his Inuit background.

As the season kicks off, Fotheringham is enthusiastic about building relationships with teammates, especially with other Canadians. “What wins games is the connection on the ice, but also off the ice, as well,” he remarked, looking forward to the camaraderie that comes with being part of a diverse team.
