B.C. BASE Jumper Rescued After Harrowing Mountain Crash

UPDATE: A Squamish, B.C. man was miraculously rescued late Tuesday night after a dangerous crash while BASE jumping off Slhanay Mountain. Zachery Mayne faced a life-threatening situation when he crashed into the rock face, prompting a massive search and rescue operation that lasted for hours.

The incident occurred on November 11, 2025, around 4:30 PM PT. Officials report Mayne executed a 90-degree turn during his jump, causing his parachute to collapse and sending him into a rapid descent. Fortunately, his parachute snagged on a rock, preventing a catastrophic fall of over 450 metres.

Rescue teams from Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR) quickly mobilized. Manager Mike Teske stated, “He was very lucky. He got very cold and was in a very precarious position. He couldn’t move.” Mayne’s friends alerted authorities, leading to a coordinated effort involving over 30 rescue members who trekked through challenging terrain to locate him.

Rescuers reached Mayne by midnight, employing support from North Shore Rescue and Talon Helicopters, who hoisted him to safety. Teske emphasized the difficulties faced by the rescuers: “If it’s hard for you to get there, it’s also very hard for us to get there and then to get you out.”

After the rescue, Mayne was transported to the hospital in serious but stable condition, suffering from significant lower leg injuries. He expressed profound gratitude for the rescue teams and the community’s support, stating, “Squamish is a special place.”

This incident raises alarms about the safety of outdoor activities, particularly as winter approaches. Teske cautions, “It does get dark very fast, and it gets cold really quickly.”

Data from B.C. AdventureSmart indicates there have been 14 BASE jumping incidents over the last five years in British Columbia, most occurring in Squamish. Executive director Sandra Riches noted the importance of safety measures for thrill-seekers: “Plan ahead, be prepared, and make safety the priority.”
