South Island Hockey Program Receives Overwhelming Donations After Theft
A hockey program in South Island dedicated to players with developmental disabilities has experienced an outpouring of support following a significant theft. Between September 28 and October 19, 2023, thieves stole approximately $3,500 worth of equipment from the South Island Ravens, including ten pairs of skates, ten team jackets, and two sets of goalie gear.
“This theft is heartbreaking for our players and families,” said Gus Ascroft, general manager and co-founder of the South Island Ravens Hockey Club. His comments came shortly after the West Shore RCMP announced the theft. Ascroft emphasized how crucial community support is to the program, stating, “Losing this gear affects our ability to get players on the ice.”
In a remarkable turn of events, the South Island Ravens have been inundated with donations from across the province. Local businesses and community members have stepped up to help replenish the lost equipment. Kirby’s Source for Sports donated brand new equipment, including two sets of goalie gear, and the Victoria Firefighters Union organized fundraising efforts.
One player’s family raised an impressive $2,700 to assist the program. Additionally, the Vancouver Canucks reached out with an offer to provide support. As donations continue to pour in from the public, Ascroft noted the overwhelming response, with contributions coming from various locations, including as far away as Quebec.
Currently, the South Island Ravens are not accepting further gear donations but have expressed deep gratitude for the community’s response. Ascroft acknowledged the positivity that has arisen from an otherwise distressing situation, saying, “We want to thank everyone for turning such a negative story into something positive.”
The investigation into the theft remains ongoing, with the West Shore RCMP working to identify the perpetrators. The support for the South Island Ravens highlights the community’s commitment to inclusivity and the importance of programs that cater to special needs athletes.
