Urgent Rescue: 70 Neglected Birds Saved in Winnipeg Home
BREAKING: In a dramatic rescue operation, 70 birds have been saved from a home in Winnipeg after enduring weeks of severe neglect. Winnipeg’s animal services department confirmed the distressing situation on social media just hours ago, revealing that many birds had perished from starvation and others were gravely underweight.
Animal services reported that, following an intensive eight-hour effort, 43 birds are now under their care, receiving essential food, clean water, and proper shelter. “Each bird now has a clean house, food, and clean drinking water,” officials stated in their update.
This urgent rescue operation comes as concerns grow about the care of exotic pets in the city. Dr. Jonas Watson, co-owner of Grant Park Animal Hospital, has voiced his suspicions regarding the circumstances leading to this situation. He believes it involved “an overwhelmed caregiver” who, despite initially having good intentions, could no longer meet the birds’ basic needs.
The rescued birds include a variety of species such as budgies, cockatiels, finches, and canaries, all found in poor condition. Dr. Watson emphasized that birds require special care and are not suitable for novice pet owners. “Birds are not easy pets to keep. They have complex needs,” he warned, urging city officials to consider implementing limits on the number of exotic pets one household can own, similar to regulations for dogs and cats.
While Winnipeg’s animal services facility is not designed to accommodate this many animals, the department is making necessary adjustments to ensure the birds can recover. They are also appealing to the community for support, seeking donations of working bird cages and volunteers to assist with daily care.
The situation highlights an ongoing issue with the ownership of exotic pets and the responsibility that comes with it. As the community rallies to assist in the recovery of these birds, the urgent need for awareness and regulations surrounding exotic pet ownership becomes increasingly clear.
For those looking to help, Winnipeg animal services encourages donations and volunteer inquiries to support these vulnerable creatures as they begin their journey to recovery.
