Kristen Wiig’s Bold Costumes Steal Spotlight in “Palm Royale” Season 2
UPDATE: The highly anticipated Season 2 of “Palm Royale” premiered this week, and fans are buzzing about the striking fashion showcased by the all-star cast. In a vibrant opening scene, Kristen Wiig steps out of a vintage Rolls-Royce, donning a tall, yellow, fringed hat, gold platform sandals, and bell-bottoms that sway with every determined stride. This bold style sets the tone for a season where costumes take center stage.
The Apple TV+ comedy made waves in its first season, and now, under the keen eye of Emmy-winning costume designer Alix Friedberg, viewers are treated to a dazzling array of looks. Friedberg reveals that her team curated “thousands” of outfits, with approximately 50-60% being original vintage pieces from renowned designers like Oscar de la Renta, Bill Blass, and Oleg Cassini.
In a recent statement to the Associated Press, actress Kaia Gerber, who plays Mitzi, expressed her admiration for the costumes, saying, “Sometimes Kristen will walk in in something, and it brings tears to my eyes.” The emotional impact of the fashion is palpable, as it not only reflects the characters’ personalities but also enhances the show’s feminist narrative.
Friedberg emphasizes that costumes play a crucial role in the storytelling. “Evelyn wore a lot more pants — which seems ridiculous to say today — but back then that was a real power move,” she noted. This season, characters evolve through their fashion choices, with Allison Janney‘s character, Evelyn, donning striking ensembles that combine humor with style.
NEW: The show’s comedy is heightened by the costumes, particularly through Evelyn’s over-the-top outfits that elicit laughs. “She’s delivering this dialogue, these lines with, like, seven wigs on top of her,” Friedberg pointed out, showcasing the absurdity in how the characters present themselves.
As the season unfolds, viewers can expect to see characters like Laura Dern‘s and Carol Burnett‘s personas deeply intertwined with their wardrobes. Burnett described the costume fittings as “great fun,” which helped her connect with her character, Norma. The signature turban she wears was born out of a practical need, but its fabulousness quickly became integral to her look.
The fashion choices also reflect deeper themes of empowerment and evolution. Leslie Bibb, who plays Dinah, mentioned her character’s shift from a trophy wife to a woman discovering her own wealth without a man, stating, “We really have Dinah going into pantsuits.” This evolution mirrors a broader cultural shift, offering viewers both humor and depth.
As fans indulge in the glamour of “Palm Royale,” they will also witness the subtle storytelling embedded in each outfit. Friedberg articulated the significance of these costumes, noting a specific dress worn by Maxine that symbolizes her rise to power in the narrative. “It’s time for her to rule,” she said, emphasizing the layered meanings behind the fashion.
With its unique blend of humor, history, and high fashion, Season 2 of “Palm Royale” promises to captivate audiences. As viewers tune in, they will not only enjoy the comedic escapades but also engage with the bold statements made through costume design.
Stay tuned for further updates as the season progresses and more fashion statements unfold.
