URGENT UPDATE: The highly anticipated relaunch of Shopify’s Indigenous entrepreneurship initiative is set to take place as Tracy Ridler, co-founder of the original program, announces “Build Native 2.0.” This comes after Shopify quietly shut down the original Build Native program earlier this year, a decision that has sparked significant concern among Indigenous communities.

In an inspiring move, Ridler, now CEO of the Centre for Native Nation Builders, confirmed the exciting revival on LinkedIn. “I chose not to let that be the end of our story,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to uplifting Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Ridler revealed that the new version, Build Native 2.0, aims to launch in early 2026, with a renewed vision to empower First Nations entrepreneurs globally. The initiative seeks to create environments where these businesses can thrive without compromising their cultural identities. “Shopify closed the program earlier this year. I brought Build Native home – back to community, back to purpose, back to commerce on our terms,” Ridler emphasized, highlighting her dedication to returning the focus to Indigenous-led initiatives.

The original Build Native program, which began in June 2020, provided Indigenous entrepreneurs with crucial e-commerce resources, including access to educational tools and financial incentives. The program was instrumental in connecting Indigenous businesses with partners like Raven Indigenous Capital Partners and EntrepreNorth across Canada, the United States, Hawai‘i, and Aotearoa (New Zealand).

In January 2023, Shopify dismantled its Equitable Commerce team and discontinued Build Native, a decision that faced backlash for its impact on Indigenous entrepreneurs. The removal of the program and other community-focused initiatives from Shopify’s website coincided with key personnel departures, raising questions about the company’s commitment to social impact.

Ridler’s vision for Build Native 2.0 includes a retail lab and workshop space designed to foster innovation and support among participants. Shopify will continue to serve as the core commerce platform, supplemented by new technological support.
