Teen Overcomes Cancer Wish, Becomes Honorary Store Manager
UPDATE: A heartwarming event unfolded on July 15, 2023, as Everett Misenas, a 13-year-old battling cancer for nearly a decade, officially became the honorary manager of Wayne’s Sports Cards and Collectibles in Edmonton. This special occasion marks a significant milestone for Everett, who has faced numerous health challenges since being diagnosed with a brain tumor at just four years old.
The grand re-opening celebration, attended by a bustling crowd, featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Everett himself. “I just really like collecting cards. I’ve always wanted to own a business,” Everett shared, reflecting his passion for sports cards and collectibles. The event also introduced an official trading card in his honor, a remarkable gesture from Upper Deck’s Heroic Inspirations program, which recognizes individuals who triumph over adversity.
Owner Wayne Wagner expressed his delight in making Everett’s dream come true after six years of planning. “We’re absolutely over the moon to have Everett here as our first-ever honorary store manager,” Wagner stated during the event. The store, celebrating 35 years in business, offered gifts for the first 150 customers and featured a celebratory cake.
Everett’s journey has not been easy. Currently on a clinical trial for his cancer, he has undergone countless treatments over the years. His mother, Kyla Misenas, emphasized the importance of this event as a distraction from his ongoing battle. “We’re hopeful that this will finally kind of be the end (of treatments) for him, but we don’t know,” she told CTV News Edmonton.
The teen’s connection to Wayne’s Sports Cards is rooted in his love for hockey cards, which he often brings to the hospital to donate to other children in need. “Hockey cards have been really important to him over the years,” Kyla explained, highlighting Everett’s caring nature and strong spirit.
The store’s re-opening attracted numerous fans eager to meet Everett, who was signing autographs for his newly unveiled trading card. The emotional atmosphere was palpable as customers celebrated his achievements and the community came together in support.
As Everett continues his fight against cancer, this day served as a powerful reminder of hope and resilience. His story resonates within the collecting community and inspires many who face similar challenges.
